Personal HFS History - P. vd Hammen

It started in December 2006. I began to notice that while eating and drinking I couldn't keep my right eye open. At first it was kind of funny, something to show friends. (Look, I know a new trick!) But as the time past I got a little tic on the right side of my face and a blinking eye.

I have a customer, who is an acupuncturist, who noticed the "tic" and offered me a session. I don't believe in the ability of acupuncture to cure HFS. Acupuncture to me seems a placebo that can only cure those who believe in it.

Mid 2007 I consulted a doctor and he sent me to an eye-specialist. I had to wait two months, to find out he should have sent me to a Neurologist. (My eyes were checked though! Both sides ok, no glasses for me! LOL.

After another two months (December 2007) of waiting, I went to see Dr. Hilkens, Rijnstate Hospital in Arnhem, Netherlands. He diagnosed HFS and I got my first Botox injections the next day. Although Botox does help a little in the social way, it also gives me a weird tension feeling in my face, like I have a strip of duck tape on my face. Now (July 2008) I’m two Botox sessions further and the HFS has progressed. It's beginning to influence my work, sleep, mood and social life. I am a web designer with my own little firm. I meet a lot of new people and the "party on my face" doesn't really help during meetings. I will never let my behavior be directed by the HFS, but it's not always that easy. On September 8, 2008 I will have my first consultation (Dr. Andre Grotenhuis, UMC Radboud Nijmegen Netherlands) to discuss a MVD. I really want it!
