Treatment History
Symptoms Experienced:
Initially a drawing of the left corner of the mouth and cheek together with a tremor sometimes reaching up to the left eye. My speech was slurred. It first occurred out of nowhere- no apparent initiator, it seemed to come on more often when speaking or eating. At its peak, the spasm and slurred speech would occur without stimulus as often as every 15-30 minutes.
Medications Tried: My neurologist placed me on Tripleptal, an anti seizure medication, as well as Xanax, an anti anxiety medication ( only as needed ). I began with 600mg of trileptal for 5 days with minimal reults. The dosage was then increased to 900mg, and after a week my symptoms disappeared. After a few months, I tried reducing the dosage to 600mg/day with no recurrence of symptoms. I am anxious to see if I can be weaned off entirely, although my neurologist feels I should stay on the medication since it has been so successful for me and the side effects are negligble. He says it is his experience that the symptoms typically reoccur. I would like to think that I may be fortunate not to need the medication, but after going through those horrible symptoms, and now functioning so well, it's hard to decide.
